What Is a Headcanon?
A headcanon is a personal interpretation or invented detail about a fictional character, relationship, or story that is not officially confirmed by the source material but that a fan chooses to believe or write as true anyway. It can be as small as a favorite drink or as big as an entire backstory. Headcanons do not need approval from the original creator; they exist because fans fill in the blanks canon leaves behind.
The term comes from combining “head” (as in, it lives in your imagination) with “canon” (the official, accepted facts of a story). So a headcanon sits in that gray zone: not officially true, but treated as true within a fan’s own version of the world. This is exactly why fanfiction writers, roleplayers, and worldbuilders lean on headcanons so heavily: they let you build depth into a character without waiting for an author to confirm it first.
